Best Ryokans for Autumn Foliage in Japan

Meg Faibisch9 min readMarch 28, 2026

Autumn in Japan — koyo season — is the country's other great seasonal spectacle. Where cherry blossoms are ethereal and brief, autumn foliage is saturated and sustained: crimson maple, golden ginkgo, russet oak, lasting weeks rather than days.

For ryokan stays, autumn is arguably the best season of all. Onsen ryokans surrounded by deciduous forest reach their peak beauty. Bathing in an outdoor rotenburo with red maple leaves overhead and mist rising from the water is one of Japan's most celebrated experiences.

When Is Autumn Foliage Season?

Koyo moves from north to south and from higher to lower elevations — the reverse of cherry blossoms:

Hokkaido: Late September to mid-October (earliest in Japan) Tohoku and Nikko: Mid-October to early November Japanese Alps (Nagano, Gifu): Mid to late October Hakone: Late October to mid-November Kyoto: Mid to late November (the most famous and most crowded) Osaka: Late November

The foliage window is longer than sakura — typically 2–3 weeks from first color change to peak. Mountain regions see color 2–3 weeks before coastal cities.

Planning insight: You can "chase" koyo northward in September, or southward in November. A 10-day itinerary that starts in Tohoku or Hokkaido and ends in Kyoto can cover the entire season in a single trip.

Why Ryokans Are Perfect for Autumn Foliage

Outdoor onsen with foliage backdrop. This is the defining autumn ryokan experience. The best rotenburo (outdoor baths) at properties like those in Nikko, Kinosaki, Hakone, and Tohoku's onsen towns frame their baths against deciduous forest. When that forest is on fire with color, the experience is extraordinary.

Autumn kaiseki. Ryokan chefs rebuild their menus around fall's bounty: matsutake mushrooms (the most prized and expensive mushroom in Japanese cuisine, only in autumn), chestnuts, autumn fish (Pacific saury, sanma), persimmon, and hearty mountain vegetables. Autumn kaiseki is considered the richest and most complex of the year.

Cooler temperatures. Unlike summer, autumn temperatures are genuinely comfortable. Outdoor bathing is pleasurable rather than sweaty. Walking paths through the inn's gardens are at their most beautiful.

Best Regions for Autumn Ryokan Stays

Nikko — Early Autumn, Mountain Drama

Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture peaks in mid-October to early November — earlier than most of Japan and therefore easier to combine with later southern stops. The mountains and cedar forests here turn extraordinary shades of red and orange, and the UNESCO-listed Toshogu shrine complex is stunning in autumn colors.

Nikko Edo Village and the waterfall circuits are worth exploring. Several excellent onsen ryokans are positioned in the forested valleys around Lake Chuzenji.

Kinosaki Onsen, Hyogo — Town Immersion

Kinosaki is a traditional onsen town where guests are expected to walk between the town's seven public bathhouses in their yukata. In autumn, the willow-lined canal at the town's center is framed by red and yellow foliage. It's a remarkably complete experience: the town itself is the attraction.

Book a ryokan with an yukata-walk package that includes access to all seven bathhouses. The contrast of traditional inn life, costumed strolling, and autumn color is uniquely Kinosaki.

Hakone — Accessibility + Beauty

Hakone's foliage peaks in late October to mid-November — accessible from Tokyo in under 90 minutes. The Sengokuhara area is famous for silver grass (susuki) in autumn, which creates a different kind of seasonal landscape alongside the red maples. Mount Fuji views are clearest in autumn (low humidity, no summer haze).

Tohoku — Deep Forests, Fewer Crowds

Tohoku — Japan's northeastern Honshu region — peaks in late September to mid-October and gets a fraction of the tourist traffic of Kyoto or Nikko. Ginzan Onsen is the most photogenic: a wooden ryokan town built along a stream, surrounded by mountains that turn vivid orange and red while steam rises from the water.

Kyoto — Peak Beauty, Peak Crowds

Kyoto in late November is Japan at its most famous. Eikan-do Temple, Tofukuji, Kinkakuji, Arashiyama — all spectacular. Expect very large crowds at popular spots, especially on weekends. Book ryokans 2–4 months ahead. Go on weekdays if at all possible.

The advantage of staying in a ryokan in Kyoto during koyo: you can walk to the most beautiful spots at dawn, before the crowds arrive.

Planning Tips for Koyo Season

Mountain ryokans first, city ryokans after. Higher elevation and more northern properties peak earlier. Build your itinerary to follow the color south.

Mid-week arrivals. Autumn weekends in popular spots (Kyoto, Nikko, Hakone) are extremely crowded. The same properties and scenery mid-week are dramatically more peaceful.

The "illumination" factor. Many temples and gardens in Kyoto and Osaka hold special evening illumination events during koyo season — the foliage lit up at night, usually by ticket-only entry. Book tickets in advance; they sell out.

Book 2–4 months ahead. Less competitive than sakura season, but popular properties in Kyoto for November still fill quickly.
