About

Shuzenji Onsen is the oldest and most atmospheric of the Izu Peninsula's many hot spring towns — centered on Shuzenji Temple (founded 807 AD by Kobo Daishi), a bamboo grove riverside promenade, and a tradition of literary visitors that includes Kawabata Yasunari and Okamoto Kido. The Kikuya Ryokan is a well-run family inn on the Katsura River, offering tatami rooms with river views, in-house onsen, and a menu featuring Izu's celebrated mountain stream wasabi (the freshest in Japan), abalone, and local seafood. Shuzenji's compact town center, with its Buddhist temple, teahouses, and Katsura River footbridge, is entirely walkable from the inn.
