History
Tomonoura is one of Japan's most historically significant port towns, serving as a vital waypoint for maritime trade since the Nara period (710-794 CE). The town was designated as Japan's first Quasi-National Park and retains its original Edo-period harbor infrastructure including stone seawalls, a lighthouse, and merchant warehouses. It was a mandatory stopping point for Korean diplomatic missions (Tongsinsa) to Japan, and the Korean envoy reportedly called the view from Tomonoura the most beautiful scenery in Japan. Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki lived here while creating Ponyo.
