Traditional ryokan tatami room

The Ryokan Experience

← Back to Guide

Essential Etiquette

Arrival Protocol

Remove shoes at the entrance (genkan) and change into provided slippers. Your host will greet you with green tea and a sweet in your room.

Yukata Etiquette

Wrap the left side over the right (right over left is for funerals). Wear your yukata to dinner, the onsen, and around the ryokan.

Onsen Protocol

Wash thoroughly before entering the bath. No swimsuits, towels, or soap in the water. Small towels can rest on your head.

Dining Customs

Meals are served at set times. Say "itadakimasu" before eating and "gochisousama" after. Try everything — kaiseki is an art form.

Seasonal Considerations

Spring

Cherry blossoms. Book months ahead for popular areas.

Summer

Fireworks festivals. Mountain ryokans offer cool retreats.

Autumn

Fall foliage rivals cherry blossom season in beauty.

Winter

Snow-viewing onsen. The most magical ryokan experience.
