Try Omi beef (one of Japan's top three wagyu brands), funazushi (fermented carp sushi), and lake fish dishes. The prefecture is also known for its sake breweries and traditional sweets made with local ingredients.
The lake can be explored by train (JR Biwako Line circles the lake), bus, rental car, or bicycle. Lake cruises are available from major ports, and the Biwako Valley Ropeway offers panoramic views. The Michigan cruise boat is popular for sightseeing.
Hikone Castle is one of only four castles in Japan designated as National Treasures. Built in 1622, it retains its original keep and many historical features. The castle complex includes the beautiful Genkyu-en Garden and offers stunning views of Lake Biwa.
