Stay overnight in a temple lodging (shukubo) for the full experience, including morning prayers and traditional Buddhist cuisine. Book in advance, especially during peak seasons. The journey from Osaka takes about 2 hours via train and cable car.
Try Wakayama ramen, fresh tuna from Katsuura, Kumano beef, and local citrus fruits. The prefecture is also famous for umeboshi (pickled plums) and whale watching tours offer unique seasonal cuisine.
Choose from several trail options ranging from day hikes to multi-day treks. The Nakahechi route from Tanabe is most popular. Book accommodations in advance and consider using luggage forwarding services. Visit the Tanabe Tourist Office for up-to-date trail information.
