About
Miyajima is one of Japan's three great scenic views and home to the Itsukushima Shrine, whose orange torii gate stands in the Seto Inland Sea and appears to float at high tide. The vast majority of the island's 4 million annual visitors arrive as day-trippers — but those who stay overnight experience something entirely different: the shrine and torii illuminated at dusk, the island's deer roaming freely through empty stone-lantern paths, and the dawn light over the gate before any crowd arrives. Jukeiso is Miyajima's most distinguished inn, with garden hot spring baths, views toward the shrine, and kaiseki featuring the island's prized conger eel (anago) and oysters from Hiroshima Bay. Arriving by last ferry and departing after dawn transforms Miyajima completely.
