History
Shima Onsen has a 1,300-year legacy, with origins traced to either Sakanoue no Tamuramaro in the Enryaku era (782-806) or the retainer Usui Sadamitsu who discovered it in a dream in 989 CE. The name "Shima" comes from the legend that its waters heal 40,000 (shi-man) ailments. During the Edo period, samurai and wealthy merchants flocked here for therapeutic bathing. The nearby Sekizenkan ryokan, open since 1694, is said to have inspired the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away. Kashiwaya carries on this centuries-old healing tradition in a folk house-style building constructed with time-honored methods.
