About

Shibu Onsen in the Shiga Kogen mountains of Nagano is one of Japan's most photogenic and historic hot spring villages — a narrow street of Edo-period inn buildings with nine communal bathhouses (each with different mineral properties), paper lanterns, and a tradition of guests making the full nine-bath circuit for good fortune. The village is closely associated with the nearby Jigokudani snow monkey park, where Japanese macaques bathe in natural hot springs during winter — one of Japan's most famous wildlife spectacles. The Kanaguya is the village's most distinguished inn, a historic building that has operated for over 400 years and is said by the Miyazaki family to have been among the inspirations for the Sen to Chihiro bathhouse.
