About

Taketomi is one of Japan's most extraordinary small islands — a perfectly preserved Ryukyuan village of white coral-stone walls, red-tiled rooftops, and flower-covered lanes, where buffalo carts are the main form of transport. Just 30 minutes by ferry from Ishigaki, the island has held on to its traditional architecture and quiet pace while much of Japan has modernized. Takana is a family inn embedded within the village, offering simple tatami rooms, Okinawan home cooking, and the distinctive pleasure of staying inside a living heritage village rather than viewing it from outside. The surrounding beaches have the famous Hoshi-no-suna (star sand), tiny star-shaped grains found in only a few places on Earth.
