Our top three picks: Ryokan Hokumon Yashiki in Hagi, with private onsen baths. Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto: The winter fugu plan (【冬の味覚期間限定】鮮度抜群!河豚 豪華会席プラン) is for stays from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027. Kannawaen in Beppu, with an onsen bath in every room.
Torafugu, the tiger pufferfish, is a winter dinner in western Japan, served at inns from November into March. In Shimonoseki at the western tip of Honshu it is called fuku, the same word as luck, and the city handles more fugu than anywhere else in Japan through its own specialist market. Awaji Island sells its own three-year torafugu from November to February, and on the Bungo Channel off Oita the catch is one of the largest in Japan, with Usuki full of fugu restaurants. The fish is poisonous in parts, so it may be prepared only by a cook the prefecture has licensed to remove them, and inns serve it as a set course: thin sashimi, fried fugu, a hotpot and rice porridge to finish. We have no inn in Shimonoseki, on Awaji or in Usuki, so this list is short: three inns whose own sites publish a torafugu dinner for this winter, in Hagi, on Miyajima and in Beppu.
The only inn inside the Hagi castle-town World Heritage area. Its winter dinner is the Fuku Fuku Kaiseki (福・ふく会席), built around Yamaguchi torafugu sashimi, fried fugu and fugu hotpot (fuku-chiri), served in the restaurant or a dining hall. The inn's site gives no dates or price for it, so ask when you book.

The winter fugu plan (【冬の味覚期間限定】鮮度抜群!河豚 豪華会席プラン) is for stays from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027. The inn keeps live fugu in a large tank and its cooks prepare them in house; the sample menu is torafugu sashimi, fried torafugu, a torafugu hotpot and egg porridge, eaten in the dining room. Booking closes five days before.
In Kannawa, Beppu's steam-vent district. Its restaurant Yui serves a fugu-zukushi course (ふぐづくしコース) from November to March only: fugu skin, sashimi, fried fugu, hotpot and rice porridge, then dessert. The inn's kaiseki uses seafood sent direct from Saganoseki on the Oita coast; the page does not say where the fugu is from.
The inns were picked by hand. Each is listed because its own website, or the local tourism association, railway or event organiser, publishes the plan, event or season dates this page describes, and we checked that source before listing it. If the top inn cannot be booked through one of our partners, the highest-placed one that can moves to first place. We do not show review scores, which come without a review count, and inns cannot pay to be listed or placed.
