Our top three picks: Notoya Ryokan in Obanazawa, with private onsen baths and a private bath to book. Ginzan Onsen Fujiya in Obanazawa, with private onsen baths and 5 private baths to book. Shiroyamakan in Shirakawago, with private onsen baths. All 5 are compared below.
Some of Japan's snow towns are at their best after dark. In Ginzan Onsen the gas lamps come on at about 16:30 in winter, and from December 2026 to early March 2027 day visitors are expected to park at Taisho Roman-kan and ride a shuttle in. Shirakawa-go lights its thatched farmhouses on four evenings only, 11, 17, 24 and 31 January 2027, from 17:30 to 19:30, by advance reservation and admission ticket: none are sold on the day, and the view from the observation deck comes only with a stay in the village on a plan that includes it, or on certain bus tours. Otaru's Snow Light Path, which in past years has lined the canal and the old Temiya railway line with snow candles, runs from 6 to 13 February 2027. In Yunishigawa Onsen in Nikko, hundreds of small snow huts (kamakura) on the Sawaguchi riverbank are lit from 17:30 to 21:00 on Fridays to Sundays between 29 January and 28 February 2027. Jozankei, in Sapporo's Minami ward, replaces its snow-candle Yukitouro with New Yukitouro, 20 January to 28 February 2027, 18:00 to 21:30, with the shrine open at night to inn guests only. We have no inn in Otaru; the five below are in or near the other four.
In the Ginzan Onsen street. The 2026-27 winter rules were still a draft when we checked: the town plans park-and-ride and timed entry for day visitors from December to early March, and warns against walking the road up from Taisho Roman-kan in winter. Ask the inn how its guests arrive.

In Shirakawa Village. On the four light-up evenings, a stay in the village on a plan that includes an observation-deck ticket is one of only two ways onto the deck. The tourist association allots its share of light-up rooms by lottery (applications 1 to 31 October 2026, winners told by email on 10 November), so ask the inn whether it has light-up rooms and whether its plan includes the deck.

In Jozankei Onsen. During New Yukitouro, 20 January to 28 February 2027, the night viewing at Jozankei Shrine is for overnight guests only, with an invitation ticket handed out by their inn; the rest of the town's lights are free to all.

In Kinugawa Onsen, in the same city as Yunishigawa. The festival is reached from Yunishigawa-Onsen Station on the Yagan Aizu-Kinugawa line by a 25-minute bus. The riverbank kamakura are lit only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 17:30 to 21:00, from 29 January to 28 February 2027, and pets are not allowed in.
The inns were picked by hand. Each is listed because its own website, or the local tourism association, railway or event organiser, publishes the plan, event or season dates this page describes, and we checked that source before listing it. If the top inn cannot be booked through one of our partners, the highest-placed one that can moves to first place. We do not show review scores, which come without a review count, and inns cannot pay to be listed or placed.
