About
Kinugawa Kanaya was built in 1931 by John Kanaya of the Nikko Kanaya family as a villa in the Kinugawa valley, and faces the river and the mountains from the centre of the Kinugawa Onsen resort (Secret Retreats, kinugawakanaya.com). It has about 40 rooms in seven types; several have open-air baths, one type a bath of Towada green tuff on a terrace half again the size of a standard room. It is the Kinugawa inn for a traveller who wants the Kanaya name and a quiet valley setting rather than the big resort hotels along the gorge. Kinugawa-Onsen Station on the Tobu line is a few minutes on foot.
