Best Ryokans for Spring 2027: Cherry Blossoms, New Openings, and Top Picks

Spring is the most competitive booking period for Japanese ryokans — and the most rewarding. Cherry blossom season at a well-chosen ryokan is one of travel's genuinely transcendent experiences. This guide covers where to book, what to expect, and which properties stand out for spring 2027.

The Spring Ryokan Calculus

Spring ryokan value depends on three overlapping factors:

Cherry blossom proximity: Is there a sakura tree, a sakura-lined path, or a sakura garden viewable from the property or within easy walking distance? The best spring ryokans have cherry trees in their own garden or overlook a park or river known for blossoms.

Kaiseki seasonality: Spring kaiseki features bamboo shoots, surf clams, cherry blossom presentations, and spring sansai vegetables. The seasonal cuisine is at its most expressive in March and April — request the spring seasonal menu.

Access to crowds vs solitude: Peak cherry blossom at Kyoto or Hakone means significant crowds at the most photographed sites (Maruyama Park, Chureito Pagoda). The best spring ryokan strategy is to position at a top-tier property in a slightly less famous area — Kinosaki, Ginzan, Nyuto — and make day trips to famous blossom sites before retreating to the inn.

Top Spring 2027 Picks by Region

Hakone (Kanto/Kanagawa)

Why spring 2027: The Hakone Open Air Museum's outdoor sculpture grounds surrounded by cherry trees; Gora Park's early-blooming cherry varieties; the Romancecar arrival framing the mountain approach through spring blooms.

Recommended tier: ¥28,000–¥45,000/person/night — enough for a private outdoor bath room with quality kaiseki. The mid-luxury Hakone tier represents Japan's best accessible spring ryokan value.

Booking window: Spring 2027 cherry blossom peak (late March to early April) — book January 2027 at the latest. Already competitive.

Kinosaki Onsen (Hyogo)

Why spring 2027: The Otani River running through town has cherry trees along both banks — the yukata-walk between the seven bathhouses in falling cherry blossoms is one of Japan's most celebrated spring images. Less internationally crowded than Hakone.

Recommended tier: ¥18,000–¥28,000/person/night — Kinosaki has excellent mid-range options.

Bonus: Kinosaki is also famous for watasekani (crab season, November–March) — the tail end of crab season overlaps with the earliest spring blossoms in a good year.

Tohoku Cherry Blossom Circuit

Why spring 2027: The Tohoku late-spring blossom season (late April to early May) overlaps with Golden Week — peak domestic tourism, but the blossom sites are extraordinary. Hirosaki Castle's 2,600 cherry trees and moat filled with floating petals; Kakunodate's weeping cherries in the samurai district.

Recommended structure: Hirosaki (1–2 nights, Aomori area ryokan) + Kakunodate/Tazawako (1 night, Akita area onsen) on the Tohoku Shinkansen.

New for 2027: The Akita area's Tazawako Onsen properties have seen renovation investment following improved Shinkansen access timing.

Izu Peninsula (Shizuoka)

Why spring 2027: Izu's cherry blossoms peak 1–2 weeks before Tokyo's (the Kawazu-zakura, a uniquely early variety in southern Izu, blooms as early as late January–February). Spring in Izu means warm Pacific air, fresh tuna season winding down, and the earliest sakura in the Kanto area.

Kawazu Sakura Festival (late January–February): A specific destination event — 8,000 Kawazu cherry trees along a river, with a famous festival. Book 2–3 months in advance for this period.

Recommended tier: ¥20,000–¥35,000/person/night for Pacific ocean view properties.

Ginzan Onsen (Yamagata)

Why spring 2027: The transition from winter to spring at Ginzan — snow still on the Taisho-era inn facades in March, then the river below running with snowmelt, then the first spring greens appearing on the valley walls above. A slower, quieter spring than the blossom-heavy south.

Best for: Travelers who have already done the Hakone/Kyoto spring and want a different spring character.

Spring Kaiseki Highlights

Ask specifically for the haru no kaiseki (spring kaiseki) at any property — the seasonal menu should feature:

  • Bamboo shoots (takenoko): The defining spring ingredient, harvested March–April. Look for wakatake-ni (young bamboo simmered with wakame seaweed) and bamboo shoot rice (takenoko gohan).
  • Hamaguri clams: March is peak season for large surf clams, used in clear broth (ushio-jiru).
  • Butterbur sprouts (fukinoto): The first foraged spring green — bitter, aromatic, in tempura or simmered preparations.
  • Spring sashimi: Hokkaido shirauo (icefish), Kyushu katsuo (bonito, starting its spring run northward), Yari-ika (spear squid) from the Japan Sea.
  • Cherry blossom presentations: Sake served in lacquerware with cherry blossom designs; wagashi shaped as blossoms; dessert plates decorated with sakura motifs.
