Ryokans for New Year in Japan

Two year-end plans for stays from 27 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, one with dinner in your room and one in the inn's private dining rooms, Hanakaido. Dinner is a special year-end kaiseki, and breakfast from 31 December to 3 January is osechi. Children of primary-school age and under are not taken in this period, and cancellation fees start 14 days before.

The Miyajima New Year plan (【宮島お正月】瀬戸内海の幸有もと特選こだわり懐石プラン) covers stays from 26 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, with a special New Year kaiseki of Seto Inland Sea fish and breakfast. You cannot choose where you eat or ask for dinner in your room. It is paid online by card, booking closes six days before, and cancellation is 20% from 14 days out, 50% from three days and 100% on the day. A mountain-side Japanese-Western room started at ¥35,750 per person for two when we checked.

A tower ryokan in Otemachi with an onsen on the top floor, drawn from 1,500m underground. From 1 to 3 January 2027 it holds a New Year tea gathering in a tatami room with a sunken hearth, serving the year's first matcha; it is free and needs no booking. Its winter programme runs from 1 December 2026 to 28 February 2027.

The inn takes bookings for the New Year nights, 30 December 2026 to 2 January 2027, through its own site. The notice gives no New Year menu, so ask what is served when you book.

Not a New Year plan as such: the Kissho Wakatida stay (吉祥若太陽滞在), 11 December 2026 to 28 February 2027, is built around the winter-solstice sun and starting the new year well. It includes Ryukyu court music on the terrace of the Tida suite, a breakfast of auspicious Okinawan foods and mochi at afternoon tea. It is two nights for ¥250,000 per group of two, on top of the room rate, and must be booked 14 days ahead.
