Summer (July-August) for festivals and outdoor activities, autumn (October-November) for fall colors, and winter (January-February) for snow festivals and hot springs. Spring (April) is also beautiful for cherry blossoms in Kakunodate.
The festival takes place in early August in Akita City. The main events occur in the evening along Chuo Dori Street. Arrive early to get good viewing spots, and consider purchasing reserved seating tickets in advance.
