About
Mukaitaki is the oldest inn at Higashiyama Onsen, in the gorge above Aizu-Wakamatsu. It began in the mid-Edo period as a bathing retreat reserved for the Aizu domain and has been run by the Hirata family since 1873. The present wooden buildings date from the early Showa era and are a Registered Tangible Cultural Property; every guest room is inside them (Fukushima Travel, Good Luck Trip). Rooms are tatami with river or garden views, and the baths are fed by Higashiyama's own spring. Dinner is Aizu kaiseki with local sake. Aizu-Wakamatsu Station is about 15 minutes away by bus or taxi.
