Spring (March-May) for cherry blossoms and festivals, autumn (October-November) for fall colors and comfortable weather, and winter (December-February) for snow scenes in Shirakawa-go. Summer offers unique experiences like cormorant fishing but can be hot and humid.
Cormorant fishing (Ukai) takes place on the Nagara River from May to October. Viewing boats depart in the evening, and reservations are recommended. The best views are from the boats, though you can also watch from the riverbank.
