About
Motoyu Kansuiro opened in 1614 as a healing spring at Tonosawa, one of the Hakone Seven Springs, and the name was given by Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first prime minister. The wooden main building dates from 1919 to 1924 and is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (kansuiro.co.jp). A bath master, the yuban, adjusts the spring water each day. The annex, rebuilt in 2019, has sukiya-style rooms, some with open-air baths. Dinner is kaiseki in the room. Tonosawa Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway is a short walk, one stop above Hakone-Yumoto.
