About
Kotohira Kadan sits on a hillside at the foot of Kotohira-gu, the shrine reached by 1,368 stone steps. Its lineage runs to 1627, when the Bizenya inn opened on the shrine approach; in 1905 the sixteenth-generation owner Genjiro Miyoshi built Kadan on the hill as its detached culinary ryokan (kotohira-kadan.jp). Guests have included the Imperial family and the novelist Mori Ogai, who stayed in the Enjukaku cottage. Rooms run from sukiya-style cottages in the garden to renovated Western rooms, with Konpira Onsen baths. Kotohira Station on the JR Dosan Line is about 15 minutes on foot; Takamatsu is an hour by train.
