About
Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama, Ehime, is Japan's oldest documented hot spring resort — mentioned in the Nihon Shoki (720 AD) and said to have been used by Prince Shotoku. The neighborhood's iconic bathhouse, Dogo Onsen Honkan, was the inspiration for the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away. Yamatoya Besso is a quiet, refined ryokan steps from the historic bathhouse, offering private garden baths, seasonal kaiseki featuring Ehime's celebrated citrus (mikan, ponkan), locally caught sea bream, and Uwajima beef. The property's atmosphere is deliberately calm — a counter to the busy tourist streets around the Honkan. Matsuyama Castle, visible from parts of the ryokan grounds, adds historic context.
