Akiu Onsen Sakan

About

Sakan at Akiu Onsen claims a thousand years and 34 generations of the Sato family, from Kanzaburo Sato's first inn; one directory dates it to 1184, so call it very old and leave the exact year open (hotel-sakan.com, Visit Miyagi). It is large, 173 rooms, set in a garden of about 26,000 square metres with ten detached rooms, most of them with open-air baths. A fire in its gallery has been kept burning for about 400 years. The water is the Akiu spring that Sendai's lords bathed in. The inn runs a shuttle from Sendai Station, about 30 minutes.
