About

Andon is a small modern ryokan in Minowa, in Tokyo's old shitamachi north of Asakusa, opened in June 2003 in a five-storey steel-and-glass building by the architect Masayuki Irie that took an Architectural Institute of Japan award (andon.co.jp). Rooms are tatami with futon, about 20 of them, with shared bathrooms. The bath is a fourth-floor jacuzzi lined with Arita porcelain tiles hand-painted by Mee Ishii, booked by guests in half-hour slots. Breakfast changes daily with the season. Minowa Station on the Hibiya Line is about five minutes on foot.
