Komatsukan Kofutei sits on the shore of Matsushima bay, the islanded inlet 40 minutes from Sendai that is counted among Japan's three classic views. Its best rooms face the bay: Sekkoku has a three-person open-air bath, an indoor bath and a veranda towards the Fukuura bridge, and Uminiwa a bath with the bay in view, sleeping six (komatsukan-kofutei.co.jp). Lower rooms have less of the view, so the category matters. The large baths switch between men and women morning and evening, and a private bath, Asahimi no Yu, can be reserved. Matsushima-Kaigan Station is about 10 minutes on foot.
